We live in times which those from previous generations could barely have dreamt of. In the West at least we have more material wealth than any of our ancestors. The vast majority of us live in homes that are dry, enjoy lives that are relatively pain free, and have more food and drink than often is good for us! But has all this material well-being made us happier or wiser? The saint we celebrate today should give us pause for thought.
Anthony was in northern Egypt around about the year 250 AD. In his late teens he heard the gospel of the Rich Young Man being proclaimed at Mass one Sunday. And, after providing for his younger sister, he literally sold everything and began to follow Jesus. The rest of his life was spent in the desert of Egypt, at first alone but later in community with others of like mind, praying and meditating. Far from becoming a recluse, Anthony become much sought after for his advice and wisdom. While his lifestyle was rigorous and disciplined it did not stop him living to be over a hundred!
Very few of us are called to imitate Anthony literally, we have other vocations to live out, but he does remind us of the things that really matter - love of God and the pursuit of wisdom. Wherever we find ourselves may the prayers of St. Anthony help us to give witness to these thing, especially in our confused and superficial age. P.D.
