St Bernardine - 20th May

How many times have you come out of Church thinking: that was a really good sermon? If your experience is anything like mine then the answer is: not often enough. All too often it appears is something that both people and priest must endure. This is a great pity as the preaching of God’s word is as powerful a part of the Catholic faith as the celebration of the sacraments. We need the example of saints like the one we celebrate on Tuesday to remind us of that fact.

St. Bernardine of Siena was known as ‘the people’s preacher’. His sermons were well prepared and powerfully delivered. Above all their simple message enabled all to understand the message of the gospel. Bernardine was born in Italy in 1380 and died there in 1444, his entire life being given over to bringing the gospel to life for his fellow countrymen and women. His lifestyle as a Franciscan backed up the message of love and poverty he preached with his lips. Crowds gathered to hear him, and, more importantly, changed their lives in response to his message. And perhaps that last is key for us. Yes, we do need a revival of preaching in the Church today but we also need a revived thirst for the message of Jesus Christ. Preaching can only be effective if there is listening as well as speaking - are we prepared to put effort into our side of the bargain? May St. Bernadine help us to do so. P.D.
