Christ the King - 23rd November

On Sunday we are celebrating the feast of Christ the King. We hear quite a lot these days about sovereignty, especially is discussions about Europe. Who has ultimate power? Which is the final authority? To put it bluntly: who rules. I suspect that the debate in the political sphere will go one for quite some time. For the Christian though it clear - Jesus has ultimate power, Jesus is the final authority, Jesus rules.
He can lay hold to this sovereignty because his kingdom is the Kingdom of God. And he is King in that kingdom, not through exertion of strength and might, but through his love. That love was shown above all on the cross, and it is a love that is more powerful than death itself.
Obviously his kingdom is not yet complete, we have only to pick up the newspapers or watch the tv to see where evil and sin still hold sway. This doesn’t mean that the world is a battleground between evenly matched forces of good and evil - that’s one of the earliest heresies. There may still be work to be done, but we are confident that one day the whole of creation will proclaim that Christ is King. P.D.
