Trinity Sunday
6th June

We hear a great deal of talk about the Church as a community these days. It's important that we reflect upon the sort of community the Church actually is. Our unity is not a reflection of common interests or a common cause, rather it is a reflection of the most perfect unity imaginable - the unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

This Sunday is the feast of this Christian understanding of the mystery of God. The unity of the holy Trinity has much to teach us about the unity of the Church. It is a unity that allows for difference - the Father is not the Son. It is a unity that is radically equal - the Son is not greater than the Spirit. It is a unity that in which the persons are completely interdependent - the Father cannot be Father without the Son.

Within the mystery of the Trinity none is greater, none is lesser, no person is more important, each is necessary for the others. If we start from the realisation of this radical equality in difference then our investigation of our own relations within the Church - priest and people, male and female, young and old, etc - might be seen in a more constructive and enriching way.
